Family Movie Night – K-Pop Demon Hunters

Alta Vista School Council is pleased to invite your family to our next Family Movie Night on Friday, January 30.

We’ll be showing K-Pop Demon Hunters, rated PG (1 hour 39 minutes). Doors and concession open at 5:30 pm, and the movie starts at 6 pm!

Admission is free! There will be hotdogs, goodies, and juice boxes for sale as a council fundraiser towards the Grade 6 Year-End Trip.

In order to keep this event as eco-friendly as we can, we’re encouraging families to bring their own reusable dish ware for their movie night food and snacks. Families are encouraged to bring cups or water bottles that can be refilled in the kitchen.

Children are welcome to wear their PJs and bring blankets, pillows and stuffies to get comfy in the gym. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Volunteers needed!

As always, the movie night organizers are grateful for the support of parent volunteers to help make movie night events a success. To sign up, please contact Dean Blachford.

Please consider bringing nut-free baked goods (homemade or store bought) for the concession by dropping them off at the office on the day of or bringing them to the movie night.

Questions?

Please contact Dean Blachford.

We hope to see you and your family there!

AVSC Corner – December 2025

Goodbye 2025, Hello 2026!

As we prepare to close out 2025, I want to thank each and every one of you for all of your contributions to and engagement with our school community and various School Council initiatives.

In November, Council authorized more funding requests from the school, including:

  • Funds to support Cooking Club for grades 5 and 6 and Indigenous Club
  • Presentations by Scientists in Schools, the Wild Bird Care Centre, an Anti-Bullying Magic show, Masabo and Luv2Groove
  • New sensory tables for the Kindergarten classrooms and a sharpening stone for our skate sharpener

Our event and program coordinators and volunteers continue to do incredible work – from our pizza and sub food programs to Family Movie Nights, Gifts of Giving, Chili Night, Purdy’s chocolate and more!

As we approach this Winter Break, I hope everyone finds some time to relax, be with friends and loved ones, and have a chance to enjoy some of the amazing things happening around our city and within our community.

On behalf of all members of the Alta Vista School Council, I wish you all a festive holiday season and we look forward to seeing you in 2026 with more opportunities to engage with our community!

Warm wishes,

Melissa, AVSC Chair

Help Us Make a Bigger Impact at AVPS!

Our School Council is proud to fund so many of the “extras” that make our school amazing — from classroom resources and technology to outdoor improvements, guest speakers, and community events.

Now, you can make a tax-deductible donation through the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board that goes directly to our school!

Choose where your donation goes:

  • Grounds Renewal Fund – Help us transform our outdoor spaces into safe, engaging, age-appropriate areas for play and learning. Our school has a large yard, but it’s not being used to its full potential — your support will help us create spaces our kids truly love.
  • School Council Fund – Support school-wide needs, like upgrading large toys in the Kindergarten classrooms, bringing in enrichment groups for primary classes, and funding activities that enhance learning, community, and life skills for intermediate classes.

Double your impact: Many employers offer donation-matching programs — check with your HR department to see if your company will match your contribution. Federal employees can also give through the Government of Canada Workplace Charitable Campaign (GCWCC) by choosing our school as the recipient.

To donate, visit our school website and at the top of the page, click the “Donate” button, or go to the “Quick Links” section then select “Donate to Alta Vista PS” from the menu.

Remember: If you’d like your gift to go to one of the funds above, please include “Grounds Renewal” or “School Council Fund” in the “Write a private message to us” field.

Need more details? Email sc-altavistaps@ocdsb.ca and we would love to discuss this further with you!

Get In On The Action

Our volunteer base is growing, but we still need more hands! Whether you want to join a meeting, volunteer at an event, or help shape big projects like our school grounds renewal, there’s a place for you at AVPS.

Get Involved!

  • Join our next Council meeting – Jan 21st at 7pm, via Google Meet, all are welcome to this Virtual meeting! Watch your emails for the link to join.
  • Spring Fair – We’re seeking a lead for our Spring Fair silent auction, who will work with a team of volunteers to deliver this memorable event. Not ready to lead? Join the group of volunteers soliciting donations and learn how the silent auction comes together.
  • Food Programs – Come help run one of the most beloved fundraisers we have – our food programs. We’re looking for someone to take the reins on the Friday Subway program and looking for input on how to grow our food programs.

Interested? Email sc-altavistaps@ocdsb.ca to learn more and get in on the action!

Back by popular demand! Alta Vista Public School (AVPS) will be going to see our own Ottawa 67’s play the Brantford Bulldogs on Saturday, February 7 at 3:00pm. The 67’s have reserved a block of tickets in Section 13 (see seating maps) for the families and friends of AVPS students! Tickets are now on sale and will be available until Sunday, February 1st at midnight (or until we sell out). Last year’s fundraiser was a sell out so don’t wait until the last minute to purchase!! These tickets would be a great Holiday gift for those hard to buy for people on your list!

To purchase tickets, please send an interac E-transfer to sc-altavistaps@ocdsb.ca. When sending the transfer: please indicate how many tickets you are purchasing and provide your name/email in the message box. If you have any questions, just send an email to alta.vista.hockey.tickets@gmail.com (please do not send e-transfers to this address).

Hope to see you at the game!

The 67’s play their games at TD Place in Lansdowne Park at the corner of Holmwood Ave. and Bank St. There is limited indoor parking available (advance reservations recommended), a free shuttle bus from Carleton University as well as free service by OC Transpo.
