Unplugged Canada – Invitation to Sign the Pledge

School Council at Alta Vista Public School has endorsed the Smartphone-Free Childhood Initiative – a global movement to delay smartphone use until at least age 14 and social media use until age 16.

By signing the Canadian pledge, organized by Unplugged Canada, we can create a new norm in our community to delay smartphones and the use of social media by children.

Makhena Rankin Guerin

Hoop Dance as Medicine – Interactive Performance (6:30 – 7:30)

Makhena uses hoop dancing to introduce the First Nation’s concept of “good medicine,” which means making choices that promote our health and well-being. She demonstrates different animal shapes that can be made with the hoops, inviting students to share what they see, raising awareness of different perceptions.

A short hoop dance performance is followed by a guided dance session, during which students are invited to try a few dance steps inspired by First Nations peoples.

Makhena Rankin Guerin is a Two-Spirit hoop dancer with Anishinaabe/Algonquin roots on her mother’s side and French Canadian roots on her father’s side. As a member of the Abitibiwinni First Nation, Makhena is dedicated to preserving and continuing her Indigenous culture for future generations. She has been practicing traditional hoop dance for over 7 years; a medicinal dance that tells a story.

Please RSVP here by April 7

Let us know what you can bring to share with the AV community and if you can volunteer at the event.

Volunteers needed!

Please consider volunteering to help make this event a success. We’re seeking a few volunteers to help with set-up, monitoring the potluck tables, and clean-up.  See available volunteer shifts in the event RSVP link.

We’ll be showing How to Train Your Dragon (live action), rated PG (2 hour 5 minutes). Doors and concession open at 5:30 pm, and the movie starts at 6 pm!

Admission is free! There will be hotdogs, goodies, and juice boxes for sale as a council fundraiser towards the Gardening Club.

In order to keep this event as eco-friendly as we can, we’re encouraging families to bring their own reusable dish ware for their movie night food and snacks. Families are encouraged to bring cups or water bottles that can be refilled in the kitchen.

Children are welcome to wear their PJs and bring blankets, pillows and stuffies to get comfy in the gym. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
