Virtual Book Fair (November 8-22)

The annual Scholastic Book Fair that kids, parents, and teachers love opens on November 8!! Thanks to Scholastic and Shopify, it will once again be a virtual event; a safe and exciting way to continue to support our students’ enthusiasm for reading, and give them the opportunity to select books that they want to read.

Shop the Alta Vista Public School Virtual Book Fair* for all your favourite books, and 20% of sales will go toward more books for the classrooms in our school. This year, the books purchased will be shipped to the school and will be delivered to your child in class. The order will be packed so they cannot see what is inside should it include a gift.

*PLEASE NOTE*

  • Please enter your Child’s name as the “One Ordering” so it can be delivered to the appropriate person. [If you enter your name as the “One Ordering,” we don’t know who your child is, and can’t deliver to the right child/classroom.]
  • If for some reason, you really don’t want it to be delivered to the child, please enter MAIS KIRYAKOS as the “One Ordering” and arrange pick up: send Mais your order number and contact info.

Place your orders on, or before Monday, November 22, and happy reading!

Planned Renovations – recording of June 10 meeting

School Council hosted a virtual meeting on Thursday, June 10 regarding the planned renovations of our school by the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (OCDSB). The renovations are scheduled to start this July, and are expected to be completed by 2024.

The objectives of the meeting were to:

  1. learn the details of the planned renovations;
  2. clarify why these plans fail to address accessibility and safety;
  3. understand the logic of doing this now (with its long duration, disruption and expense) when the building needs broader replacement; and
  4. how AVPS is currently being prioritized within the OCDSB for building replacement or major renovations.

OCDSB Superintendent, Dorothy Baker, and Trustee, Chris Ellis, attended along with representatives from the OCDSB’s departments of Facilities (Daniel Bradley) and Planning (Karyn Ostafichuk).

A recording of this meeting can be viewed here.

Next steps

A small group of concerned parents/guardians have already assembled and are keen to advocate for appropriate long-term decisions in the best interest of our school.

School Council continues to seek parents and community members who are interested in collaborating to work with the OCDSB and provide feedback to the Ministry of Education regarding the planned classroom renovations. A variety of skills will be needed to address this issue.

Please contact us at sc-altavistaps@ocdsb.ca if you are able to help.
