Winter Break Gifts of Giving

The second Winter Break Gifts of Giving event will take place during the day at Alta Vista Public School on Friday, December 13 (save the date), in the main gym. This year, all proceeds will be directed toward School Council outreach initiatives.

This event provides students with an affordable opportunity to shop for their loved ones while providing you with the chance to rid your home of clutter.

Until December 11, gift items can be donated in the box in the main lobby of the school.

We will gratefully accept new or gently used items – toys, stuffed animals, costume jewellery, games, sports equipment (balls and gloves) and DVDs. If it is something your child(ren) would enjoy giving or receiving, we will be happy to accept it! Please, nothing breakable, and no books.

We are also in need of donations of gift bags and tissue paper.

During the day December 13, students will shop for their loved ones at the Winter Break Gifts of Giving. Each item will cost $2. Volunteers will wrap purchases using the donated gift bags and tissue paper.

We need volunteers!

Volunteers are needed for the evening of December 12 (set-up) and during the day December 13 (wrapping, assisting and clean-up).

Family Movie Night – The Secret Life of Pets 2

After repair work last week and the reopening of the school today, Alta Vista School Council is pleased to invite your family to Family Movie Night on Friday, November 29, 2019 (save the date). We’re looking forward to a fun event and a chance to unwind with our school community.

We’ll be showing The Secret Life of Pets 2 rated PG (1 hour 26 minutes). Doors and concession open at 5:30 pm, and the movie starts at 6 pm!

We’re excited to be running this event as a fundraiser to support AVPS’s “Nature Warriors” club. The Nature Warriors will use the proceeds from this event to help them buy materials to build “seating boxes” around the trees in the Kinder yard to enhance their viability and growth. Such a cool idea to care for our school’s outdoor environment!

In order to keep this event as eco-friendly as we can, we’re encouraging families to bring their own reusable dishware for their movie night food and snacks, as well as using the reusable dishware from breakfast club. We’ll also be phasing out the sale of bottled water, and encourage families to bring cups or water bottles that can be refilled in the kitchen.

Admission is free! Juice, popcorn, pizza, samosas, hot dogs and treats will be offered for sale as a Council fundraiser. We will also be offering coffee and tea for adults at a new “parent café,” (reusable mugs encouraged).

Children are welcome to wear their PJs and bring blankets, pillows and stuffies to get comfy in the gym. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Volunteers needed!

As always, the movie night organizers are grateful for the support of parent volunteers to help make movie night events a success. In particular, we’d welcome any bakers who’d like to contribute peanut and nut-free treats or snacks. We will be coordinating volunteers for this event via Signup Genius.

Questions? Please contact Erika Van Neste (Erika.thornton@gmail.com or by phone or text at 613-447-8338).

We hope to see you and your family there!

School OPEN on Monday Nov. 25, School meeting with OCDSB on Wednesday Nov. 27

OCDSB:  Alta Vista Update- Nov. 24: Schools to reopen Mon. Nov. 25th  alta_vista_update_-_nov_24

Even though this is totally true and we are appreciate that repairs are made, continue to be made and proper protocol re: asbestos and mould removal are in place, we still have concerns about the reasons the leak occurred, how the response to the leak was carried out and the lack of communication about all of this.

Repairs will continue for some time. being done and thus school schedules/routine will need to be adjusted

On Wednesday the 27th there will be a meeting with OCDSB and our school community where we will discuss this more. More information to come

For tomorrow if your child is not going to school due to concerns of repairs can you please state that when you call in your child’s absence so that this can be tracked.

If you have any concerns please write to school to let school know. This helps school and board understand the level of parent concern. We ask that you kindly CC

Council Response to Alta Vista PS repairs update

Good evening Mr Carson,

Thank you for the answers you have provided thus far and the communication to our community.

Although its good news that the heating system seems to be operating fine so far, in reference to “no leaks were observed”, the way this is worded makes it sounds like minimal testing was undertaken.   This is disappointing as this an opportunity to carry out preventative measures during peak daytime hours while school is closed.

Can you please clarify based on your update, not all of our questions were answered

Status of Repair:

  • Areas sealed off on Monday around mid day  – is incorrect our information clearly has it that it was near end or after school, and students assisted in clearing out the affected areas

Follow up on Mould testing:

  • Since source of moisture has been corrected and cleaning has been continues – The rooms where Grade 1’s will be are they adequately clean, not just mopping and dusting through out the rest of the building

Decision Points on Re-opening:

  • is the steam plant fully operational?
    • Is there a report that specifically indicates where pipes were reviewed.  We would expect review of many pipes as possible around the school and or monitoring of pressure gauges around the school.
    • What testing procedures were implemented to check for leaks for the Board to sign off that the heating system is working properly.
    • No mention was made of fully testing the heating system to its design capacity or full operating range.  Has the heating system been tested to replicate -30 C outside temperature, for example?

It is important that these questions be addressed prior to the decision to open the school so that parents can feel reassured that the environment is safe for students and staff.

Thank you,

Janice Chamberlain and Nancy Solange-Dean
