AVPS School Council Speaker Series – January Presentation – Childhood Anxiety: How to Help

Do you wonder if your child has anxiety? Could you recognize it? Do you wonder if you are contributing to the anxiety, or what does contribute? What are some strategies to make stress more manageable? How do you develop resilience? Come and learn some strategies. Kimberly Vandermeer, an experienced childhood anxiety educator will be speaking and answering your questions.

The Speaker Series presentations are free. While an RSVP is not required, an email to AltaVistaSC@gmail.com indicating your interest in attending would be appreciated to allow us to plan for space.

Just one week until the Holiday Bazaar and Winter Gear Sale!

The Bazaar will have around 30 local vendors this year as well as 3 local authors, a bake sale and soup and chili for lunch. Drop by to do some early holiday shopping and enjoy a visit with the AVPS community! Don’t forget to drop off any winter gear you’d like to sell on the Friday evening (from 6-8 pm in the gym).

Here are the details:

Gear Drop Off for the Gear Sale – Friday, December 5, 6-8 pm
Holiday Bazaar – Saturday, December 6, 10 am-2 pm
Winter Sports Gear Sale – Saturday, December 6, 10 am-noon

Family Movie Night this Friday (November 28). We will be showing the Lego Movie!

Doors open at 5:30 pm and the movie will start at 6:00 pm. Bring blankets, cushions and even wear your pjs! Students must be supervised by an adult.

Limited quantities of juice, popcorn and hot dogs for sale.

Please note: no running in the gym or climbing on the stage. There were a few complaints about the noise level at last month’s movie night. Let’s respect others and ensure everyone can hear and enjoy the movie!

Improving Study Skills: A Talk for Parents of Students JK-Grade 8 – Wednesday, November 12

Speaker: Myrna Rootham

Are you interested in learning more about how to build good study skills and techniques to help your child learn? Have you ever wondered when is the best time of day to do homework? How do you make homework less of a struggle? This evening hopes to answer some of these questions and more.

Myrna Rootham is a teacher with forty years experience who has taught all grades from kindergarten through high school both in English and in French Immersion. She has taught Special Education classes as well. Myrna is well aware of the many challenges students and parents face at school today, and looks forward to sharing some of her tips and tricks that have worked for her many students.

Junior and Intermediate students who could benefit from this talk may wish to attend as well.
